A participant’s view.
In October 2009, I did the Canine First Responder course. It lasts a day and is held in Celbridge, Co Kildare. I went to it with some veterinary knowledge, but this is certainly not essential. Obviously, the people going to it have experience with dogs, so they have a certain amount of knowledge.
I found it very useful. The main thing I got out of it is that it gives you an easy-to-remember standard operating procedure for an emergency. The order in which you carry out checks is very important. Also covered was the way to approach a distrait owner and what to say (and the order to say it in) to the vet. We practised on life-sized model dogs, some of which even had a pulse!!
We received notes before hand, which we had to answer questions on before going to the course.
All in all, well worth the 100 euro it cost.
